1, 2, 3… Let’s Go. A Quick Rundown of How Gamers in Nakuru, Kenya Like to Go Down
Gaming isn’t what it used to be. There’s so much variety these days, and way more genre options for every person out there.

The video gaming culture in Nakuru, Kenya, is pretty much all things FIFA. You'll find stalls all around the CBD, places with PlayStation consoles that charge a certain amount of money to play FIFA for an hour or whatever time you'd like. Some hold tournaments. Yes. Actual tournaments where the winner gets some kind of reward.

Clearly, I don't know much that goes around in Nakuru's FIFA world, but I can tell you that my boyfriend and his boys can spend an entire day competing with each other. Usually, two players per session while the others root for whomever. There's a TikTok I saw of two brothers competing. The score was 20-4. Yup. The winner's head soared in the clouds. The loser, well, his eyes were sore red from tears. Yet the game still kept going.

FIFA is culture. It's a tradition. And so is watching the actual FIFA championship games.

That's not to say people can't walk into gaming shops and request to play something else. I have been to Nairobi and played Mortal Kombat for the first time ever. Needless to say, I got my ass whooped, but I did have the time of my life. To this day, I have Mortal Kombat (MK) 11 Ultimate in my games collection. And whenever my boyfriend has his friends over, I suggest they slot some time for MK so I can jump into the fun, too.

Yes. Gaming is a boys' thing here. And, nearly always, it's ever a boys' sport. I have yet to meet a girl who likes to game. I did show my girlfriends a few tricks, and one of my girls beat me on her second round playing MK. Quick study that one. But never do they ever suggest we have a gaming hangout. And instead, preferring to go wine tasting or do some outdoor activity.

I love gaming. My boyfriend loves gaming. I'd love to find more gamers out there, in my home town, Nakuru, if possible. To have tournaments with. Preferably something besides FIFA because I tried to play FIFA, and my heart just wasn't in it. Division, instead, maybe? Or Call of Duty? A mutual friend promised to give us the God of War. I feel I'll love that too.

In the past, GTA was on fire. On computers mostly, which a family friend had. So perhaps I'll save up some cash to reboard the GTA bandwagon. I do know another mutual friend who's made it his mission to buy every blockbuster game currently on the market. He has like over 10 games, Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Elden Ring, and more. He doesn't mind breaking the bank for top-notch experiences. Oh, and he has a PS5, too.

Forget pool tables. Board games. Skipping rope. Okay. Still, do the games that stretch your muscles. Games that help you exercise. But while at it, don't forego the whole other new way of living. The not-so-new culture that's got millions of gamers hooked for days.
